Intake cut by half in RGUKT IIITs

Decision taken on the recommendation of a Cabinet
‘Existing infrastructure in the institutes is grossly inadequate'

The annual intake of students in each of the three IIITs (International Institutes of Information Technology) has been reduced from 2,000 to 1,000.
The IIITs were established by the Rajasekhara Reddy government, one each in the three regions of the State, to offer quality IT education to rural youths and make them employable through a six-year integrated course.
The decision to cut the intake by half was taken by the Cabinet, at a meeting here on Thursday, on the recommendation of a Cabinet sub-committee constituted by Chief Minister K. Rosaiah recently. The four-member committee concluded that the existing infrastructure in these institutes—particularly the hostel accommodation and faculty—was grossly inadequate to achieve the original goal of bringing them on a par with the IITs.
Sources said the Ministers were conscious of the criticism this decision would draw on the score that the present government was rolling back all the schemes. But, it was pointed out that once these institutes reached their sixth year, they would together have 36,000 students and it would be a Herculean task to provide them even the basic facilities. The IIITs are presently functioning at Basar (Adilabad district), Idupalapaya Valley (Kadapa) and Nuzvid (Krishna) under the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies. A spokesman, however, clarified to reporters later that for now, the Cabinet's decision applied for the 2010-2011 academic year. It would be reviewed once the infrastructure was improved.
Enquiries with Higher Education Department revealed that the IIITs, which were originally authorised to admit 6,000 students annually—that is each 2,000, began admissions two years ago and they have, at present, a total of 12,000 students on rolls. Sources said the Government was also concerned over identifying funds for the IIITs which was of the order of Rs. 600 crore annually.

            RGUKT need more transparency... news
The Andhra pradesh state government decided to simplify the process of admissions into the RGUKT IIITs in Idupulapaya, Nuzividu and Basar. Government asked the officials of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies to devise a new method. Admissions to the IIITs have courted controversies since they were set up in 2008-09. There are 6,000 seats in the three IIITs. There is no entrance test and the admissions are on the basis of merit secured in SSC exams. In the first year, student alleged that several meritorious aspirants failed to find a place in the selection list while some with comparatively less marks made it through. Officials were then forced to admit an additional 600 students, 200 students in each IIIT to accommodate the merit students who were not mentioned in the selection list. In the 2nd year, hundreds of urban schools had managed to secure 'rural status' to claim admissions into the IIITs where 80 per cent of the seats are reserved for rural students. The officials will come out with a proposal for a new admission method. It will be kept in the public domain. Students can send us a feedback. Government will devise the new method based on that.

At last some move in RGUKT admissions. AP IIIT Master Merit List (District wise & Management, Caste wise) to admissions in to IIIT campus released. Last time Programming error in the admission process of the three APIIITs, left hundreds of students fuming, forcing officials to withdraw the admission list. The APSCHE Chairman, K.C. Reddy said there were some discrepancies in the list provided by the School Education Department officials about the toppers in each mandal and the data generated based on the applications submitted by the students. They were not matching in some cases and this was noticed by the officials while looking into the representations given by some parents. The process would be over by August 10 or 11. He admitted that the software designed for the purpose also had some discrepancies. The admission process was mired in controversies since the beginning and the announcement of admissions was postponed several times. Out of the 6,000 seats available in the three institutes 5,100 were earmarked for rural students. CANDIDATE TOTAL INFORMATION & MERIT LISTS SEE HERE
