The Andhra Pradesh state government has initiated the process of implementing the Right to Education (RTE) Act, which provides free and compulsory education to children in the age group of 6-14 years, from the coming academic year. It has also asked the department of school education to carry out a detailed mapping of existing schools to establish ‘neighbourhood schools’ as a part of the RTE. The new rules also mention the upgradation of existing primary schools from Class I-V to Class VII. The secretary of secondary education, Mr Suresh Chanda, said a state advisory council will be established to monitor the implementation of the scheme.
